Over the years I have come to realise how important it is to look after yourself, both inside and out. Good diet, regular exercise and adequate sleep are all important as we know, but so is relaxation - massage is a wonderful way to achieve this. I have been practising for some years and over the past 2years have been doing corporate work too.
Scalp massage has been practiced for nearly four thousand years by families in India as part of everyday life. For the women it would be relaxing but for the men it was used as part of the routine at the barber’s as a hair treatment to stimulate hair growth and to enrich it.
Indian head massage was brought to England in the nineteen eighties by Mr. Narendra Mehta who had been in England studying to be a physical therapist. He formulated the treatment we know today which involves massaging the areas where tension gathers namely the neck, shoulders, upper back and upper arms, in addition to the face and scalp. Our word ‘shampoo’ derives from the Indian word ‘champi’ which means massage of the head.
The treatment is known to be relaxing and can also be therapeutic. It can induce a deep, dreamless sleep, give vitality on waking and can reduce stress levels; all of these effects have been noted by clients. The treatment is very accessible as it requires the client to sit in an upright position on a chair or stool, and there is no need to remove clothes. No oils need be used; however, they may be used on the face and scalp if wished. In the same way, clothes may be removed from the shoulders upwards and oils applied to all areas namely the shoulders, neck, upper back, upper arms and of course, the face and scalp. The oils applied are carrier oils, such as almond jojoba and coconut and can be varied according to preference and need.
