Iridology

Iridology is the study of the iris (the coloured part of the eye), and works on the premise that the colour and condition of the iris can reveal much about the internal workings and potential problems of the body. Each person’s iris is a unique blueprint, similar to a fingerprint, from which a trained practitioner can identify health problems before symptoms make themselves known.

Iridologists believe that, if a health problem can be detected early enough, remedial action can be taken to prevent the problem becoming a full-blown illness. Iridology, unlike many of the other therapies in this book, is essentially a diagnostic tool rather than a method of treatment.

How does it work?

The iris consists of numerous delicate fibres that contain unique patterns, each of which is thought to mirror tissue changes in various parts of the body.

Conventional doctors often examine the retina of the eye to determine how diseases, such as diabetes, high blood pressure or cholesterol are affecting blood vessels.

Iridologists have ‘mapped’ segments of the iris to correspond with the organs of the body. By examining the markings in the iris and determining which part of the body they correspond to, iridologists can make assumptions about the possible future workings of the body on both physical and emotional levels.

What does it involve?

Having your eyes examined by an iridologist is non-invasive, painless and safe. The practitioner uses a torch and a magnifier or microscope to look at each eye and then records information about colour, pattern and irregularities.

By also asking questions about the client’s health, a picture is built up about that allows the iridologist to identify potential health problems or weaknesses in the body, or to make deductions about mood and personality traits. They then provide advice or suggest suitable courses of action for how to carry out preventative measures.

What is it good for?

Although iridology isn’t used to treat specific symptoms, by helping to raise awareness about potential problems it enables clients to become proactive in the management of their own health. Having a greater insight into the body’s potential weaknesses allows people to help themselves to be more healthy in the future through adjusting their diet or lifestyle, or by keeping a check on areas that may become problematic in the future.

What are the benefits?

Iridology acknowledges that we are all individuals and have different responses to similar illnesses. Therefore, it is good for prescribing the appropriate course of action for a specific client.

What are the side effects and when should it be avoided?

There are no real side effects as this is a diagnostic rather than treatmentbased tool. However, some people may prefer not to know about the possible health problems that may affect them in the future.
